The internet is vast and wondrous source of knowledge that can help your human resources department and organization immensely. You can find many useful resources on the internet ranging from the Society for Human Resources Management's extremely helpful, but costly, website, to the numerous HR and organizational development blogs that provide expert advice. The internet can be the human resources professional's best friend. Here are three additional ways in which you can make the web work for you:
Community and communication - With the advent of the Web 2.0 world, people can now get more involved with the internet and communicate more easily. Use this technology to your advantage. Set up company Facebook pages and MySpace pages and help employees to feel part of a community. This suggestion has been mentioned in the past, but use new forms of communication, such as Twitter or AOL's Instant Messenger, to spread important organizational news. E-Learning - Though traditional classroom training and learning still have a place, internet learning is becoming increasingly popular because of the highly desirable flexibility and tracking features. If your organization does not offer any form of e-learning, it may be time to investigate how the internet can significantly help your training and development operations. Spreading the company culture and values - These tie in closely with community and communication already mentioned. Create a human resources "mini-website" on your company's intranet - or on the larger internet - where you can post such things as the organizations values, messages from upper management, training and development events, and any other information that could benefit the company's employees.
